In this Mandarin lesson, we get an inside look as to how China can be really funny sometimes. Although, if I was massaging stinky feet 12 hours a day and working about 26 days/month, I’m not so sure I’d look forward to this part of the job.

In lesson 20 of Mandarin Classes Blog, you will learn a little bit about abortion and kind of see how it works in China. I’ve heard it can be pretty cheap (like 200rmb) and Chinese girls, because they usually don’t have too many religious beliefs, can go through with it with fewer qualms. In this scene, though, doesn’t look like the most sanitary of places (yikes!).

Near the end of this lesson in the PDF English pinyin section, you will actually learn a few fun Mandarin words phrases (that do not deal with abortion) - such as:

你看什么 = ni3 kan4 shen2me = what are you looking at?

刚做完 = gang1 zuo4wan2 = just finished

你有病吧？你 ni3 you3 bing4 ba? ni3 = Are you out of your mind? (notes: 你 at the end of the sentence really changes the tone to a more harsh accusing one)

爱信不信 ai4 xin4 bu xin4 = believe it or not

难受 = nan4shou4 = hurt

In Lesson 19 of Mandarin Classes blog, we learn Mandarin from two skilled (?) negotiators. Ankun is busy watching the windows in the same building as the massage parlor and Lin Dong asks him to come up to the roof to talk. They then negotiate (by drawing out charts with rocks) how much Lin Dong should pay for the baby and the “psychology distress fee”.

上来 = shang4lai2 = come up. 上来说话 = shang4lai2 shuo1hua4 = come up and talk

Today you will learn Mandarin that you would (maybe) use at the dinner table. We meet Pingguo’s (ex) coworker - the delightful Xiaomei. She has graduated from slicing off toes to exchanging her body for material things, like cell phones and perfume.

From my travelling experiences with my guy friends in Asia, it seems like Asian girls (girls who grew up in Asian and have never been outside their home country) are all, in they’re own way, a bit like prostitutes. Particularly, Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand - girls in these places who are not officially prostitutes but have a “regular” day job usually want gifts or money in exchange for sex. Very different from what I’m used to in Canada. Yes, probably has a lot do with them having zero money. Even in China girls have a touch of this kind of mindset, particularly girls who are from the countryside and don’t have as much money. It’s not really a big deal to me, it’s just kind of annoying. Like, when you just want to hang out with some girls, but they only want you to buy them a stupid necklace.

In Shanghai there is a different level of this “prostie” mentality. The really hot girls here don’t work and their parents don’t want them to work. Their parents want them to invest all their time and money into looking pretty so they can snag a rich guy. Once these hotties are snatched up they are completely “taken care of” - rent, monthly allowance (10,000rmb or so), clothes, etc are all paid for. However, if the rich bf thinks money and gifts seals their relationship as a monogamous one, he’s way wrong. These girls has loads of free time on their hands to date guys who are much more fun than these rich stiffs. At the same time, the rich bf seems to be treating a few girls the same way. So, in the end, it seems like everybody is cheating on everybody but no one seems to care because both parties are satisfied (kind of).

In this Mandarin lesson, Ankun,  unbeknownst to Pingguo, tells Wangmei that her husband cheated on her and shagged his wife. For some dumb reason, Ankun thinks that Lin Dong will just admit to it and pay the money even though Ankun doesn’t have any evidence.

Wang Mei, however, seems like lately she’s been doing more cupping than shagging - as she puts forth a different option for Ankun. A very naughty option.

In this lesson, you’ll learn some edgey relationship language and will also learn why “wearing a green hat” means “to be cheated on” in Chinese.  A few things that you might not have learned in your regular mandarin language classes. Learn Chinese now!

In this lesson, Wangmei is busy “cupping” a big-boned customer and talking about her infertility problem. The large Chinese woman says that people like them can’t get laid easily and can only lay here cupping. Wang Mei thinks that her infertility is not really a problem and that she doesn’t want kids anyway.

It’s a good way to learn Mandarin by practice with the workers at places like these. I’ve tried this “cupping” (Chinese medicine technique) before at a massage place near my house. For those of you who don’t know what this is, it’s when they stick glass bulb on you with a flame inside. So after they place it on your back the fire consume all the oxygen in the bulb thus creating a strong suction. They leave it (about eight bulbs) on your back for about 20 minutes or so. It’s supposed to get out the toxins from you body and it does feel pretty good - although it leaves 8 huge purple marks on your back that don’t go away until about 2 weeks later. The darker the color on your back, the more toxins you have apparently.

Mandarin Classes Lesson Eleven - Blackmail

In this lesson, Lin Dong thinks Pingguo wants to blackmail him for more money and that Pingguo and Ankun are working together on this. In reality, Ankun is secretly scheming on his own, trying to figure out different ways to scam money from Lin Dong.

Lin Dong wants to fire PIngguo and offers her 2000rmb to keep everything quiet. Pingguo doesn’t want to be fired and threatens to report him for rape using the “stuff he left on her skirt” for evidence.

Mandarin Classes Lesson Ten - Emotional Distress

In this lesson, Lin Dong finishes up some business in a hotel room. He then receives a call from Ankun demanding 20,000rmb for “emotional distress” for what Lin Dong did to Pingguo. Lin Dong plays dumb and tries to brush him off.
